Who was your favorite character and why? Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? Yes, I just drove from Melbourne to Brisbane and it went in a flash listening to these novels. Any additional comments? Will listen to the rest of the series. From indies to Australia in this volume. The flow of the series is at its best in the repeating year of All the characters and places seem so very real.
This is one of the best books in the series , though they are all great. The insight of early Australia is particularly good. Best narrator I have heard. From a desert island to the penal colony in Australia O'Brian's story is a must for all seafarers. A splendid continuation. Loved it to bits. Lots of twists and turns with great consequences setting the reader up for the next story. A tour de force O Brien can portray very human characters whilst displaying encyclopeadic knowledge of so many subjects.
I love it that in the 14th book of the series Patrick O'Brian still has the ability to shock, intrigue and surprise. Ric Jerrom is a master reader - keeping the consistency of all the many, many different voices. I've followed the series up to here and am full of admiration for the world O'Brian has created.
I'm afraid I prefer the other narrators I have been used to with a different edition from the library. Jerrom uses lots of inflection and a rise and fall of volume and tone - always where it seems unnecessary. Jack Aubrey is often given a turn of voice far far too effeminate which really niggles and sometimes I'd prefer he stick to a flatter delivery of accents leaving me able to interpret for myself.
I very nearly skipped the book out of frustration! I wont say I got used to it but I'm hooked on O'Brian's world now and it keeps me sane on a long drive! Perhaps, in fairness to Jerrom, I'm just used to my usual narrators now - others clearly really enjoyed his delivery. I've read this series through times and have just got to the end of my second audible play through of the Nutmeg.
The Nutmeg of Consolation (The Aubrey/Maturin Series, Book 14)
Although it's quite difficult and mostly subjective to pick a favourite in this remarkable series I think this particular novel is a strong contender. I mean it's got it all, the aftermath of a shipwreck, the acquisition of a new ship, a chase, an action, a rendezvous, a prison break!
